Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
By Tim Hayden· Published · Updated
If your business is not showing up on Google Maps, the cause is usually one of a few things: the profile is not verified, the main category is wrong, your name, address, and phone number do not match across the web, the service area is set up wrong, or the profile is too thin for Google to trust. Being verified gets you on the map. It does not guarantee you show up when someone nearby searches for what you do. That depends on how relevant, how close, and how well known your business looks to Google.
Step 1: Confirm the profile is verified
Search your exact business name on Google Maps. If nothing comes up, or you see a "Claim this business" link, your profile is not verified or not owned by you. Sign in to Google Business Profile with the account you use for the business and finish verification. Google may ask for a video, a phone call, a text, or a postcard. Until this is done, you have little control over what shows.
Step 2: Pick the right primary and secondary categories
Your primary category is the single biggest signal for which searches you can appear in. A roofer listed only as "Contractor" will struggle to show for "roofer near me." Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main work, then add a few secondary categories for other real services. Do not add categories for work you do not do.
Step 3: Make your name, address, and phone match everywhere
Google compares your profile with your website and with directories like Yelp, Angi, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and your local chamber. If one says "Smith Plumbing LLC" on Main St with one phone number, and another says "Smith's Plumbing" on Main Street with an old number, Google is less sure which details are right. Use the exact same business name, address, and phone number in every place. Use your real business name. Adding keywords like "Best Bronx Plumber" to the name breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
Step 4: Set up your service area correctly
- If customers come to you, like a shop, salon, or office, show your address and make sure the map pin is on the right building.
- If you go to customers, like a plumber, electrician, or cleaner, and you do not serve people at your address, hide the address and list the towns or areas you serve instead.
- If you do both, show the address and also add your service areas.
A service business that shows a home address it does not want customers visiting, or a shop that hides its address, often gets filtered or shows up less.
Step 5: Fill in hours, services, and photos
Add regular hours and holiday hours. Google is less likely to show a business it thinks might be closed. List each service you offer by name, in the words customers use. Upload real photos of your work, your team, your vehicles, and your storefront if you have one. A complete profile gives Google more reasons to match you to a search.
Step 6: Get steady, recent reviews
Reviews help both your ranking and the customer's decision. A business with three reviews from two years ago tends to lose to one with forty recent reviews. Ask every customer after each job, and reply to the reviews you get.
Checklist: cause and fix
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Profile not verified or not claimed | Claim the profile and complete Google's verification steps. |
| Wrong or vague primary category | Choose the most specific category for your main work. Add real secondary categories. |
| Name, address, or phone differ across sites | Use the exact same details on your website, profile, and every directory. Fix old listings. |
| Keywords stuffed into the business name | Change it back to your real business name. |
| Address shown or hidden the wrong way | Show it if customers visit you. Hide it and list service areas if you travel to them. |
| Map pin in the wrong place | Move the pin to your actual location in the profile editor. |
| Missing or wrong hours | Add regular and holiday hours and keep them current. |
| No services or photos listed | Add each service by name and upload real photos of your work. |
| Few or old reviews | Ask every customer for a review and reply to each one. |
| Profile suspended | Fix the rule break, then request reinstatement through Google's support form. |

- I am verified. Why am I still not showing up on Google Maps?
- Verification gets you on the map, but ranking depends on how relevant your profile is to the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how well known your business looks. Check your category, details, and reviews next.
- How long does it take to show up after fixing my profile?
- Small changes can show within days. Bigger changes, like a new category or cleaned up directory listings, can take several weeks.
- Should I hide my address if I work from home?
- If customers do not visit you there, yes. Hide the address and list the areas you serve.
- Can I pay Google to show up on Maps?
- You can run paid ads that appear on Maps, but you cannot pay to rank higher in the regular Maps results.
