Plumbers: The Short List of Names AI Gives Your Town

By Tim Hayden· Published · Updated

Ask an AI tool like ChatGPT for a plumber in your town and it will not hand your customer a directory. It names a few companies and moves on. For a plumbing business, that short list is the whole game now. Every homeowner who asks AI first, and more of them do every month, only ever hears those names.

Here is what that looks like in a real check.

A real answer, from a real town

On November 3, 2026, we asked ChatGPT the way a customer in Massapequa Park, New York would ask for a plumber. The names it gave, in order, were:

  1. Red Lion 24/7 Emergency Plumbing
  2. All Island Plumbing Heating & Cooling
  3. George The Sewer Gator Plumbing & Drain Cleaning

Then we asked the same question for Massapequa, the next town over. The list changed. Sullivan Plumbing & Heating appeared, and the order shuffled. Same trade, same day, a few miles apart, different short list. Every plumber not on either list was simply not part of those customers' choices.

What the named plumbers have in common

Look at the names AI returns across towns and one pattern repeats. Each of them presents a single clear story about the business everywhere the web talks about it, and AI repeats that story. The plumbers who get skipped tell a thinner, scattered story, and AI quietly picks a competitor it can describe with more confidence.

None of the plumbers on these lists bought their spot. There is no ad slot inside an AI answer. What separates the named from the skipped, factor by factor, is the breakdown we send after the check at the end of this page.

What it means if you are not on the list

It does not mean you do bad work. It means that for a growing share of homeowners, you do not exist at the moment they choose. That gap is closable, and owners who close it tend to move fast, because an AI answer is rebuilt from current information rather than locked in for a year.

And check from the right town. Your customers do not search from your shop address. They search from their kitchen, in the town where the pipe burst.

Questions plumbers ask

Can I pay to get into AI answers? No. There is no paid placement inside the answer itself. The names come from your public footprint.

How many names does AI usually give? A short list, most often three to five. That is why being sixth is the same as being sixtieth. You are either named or you are not.

My competitor is smaller than me. Why are they named? Because AI is not measuring your revenue or your years in business. It is measuring how clearly the web describes you.

Check for yourself. Pick the town your customers search from, choose plumbing or your trade, and see the businesses AI names. Then check your own name against the list.
