Who Does AI Recommend in Your Town?
By Tim Hayden· Published · Updated
When a customer asks an AI tool like ChatGPT for a plumber, a roofer, or a cleaning company near them, they do not get ten blue links and a map. They get a short list of names, usually three to five businesses, presented as the answer. If your business is not one of those names, you were never in the running for that job. The customer never saw you, never compared you, and never knew you existed.
This is the new word of mouth, and it works differently from the old one.
Why AI names the businesses it names
AI answers are built from what the open web says about a business. The businesses that get named present one clear, consistent picture of themselves everywhere they appear, and AI has learned to trust that picture. The businesses that get skipped are usually not worse at the work. Their public picture is thin, scattered, or out of date, and to an AI answer a business like that barely exists.
What exactly builds that trusted picture, factor by factor, is the breakdown we send after you run the check at the end of this page. It is more specific, and more fixable, than most owners expect.
It changes from town to town
Here is the part most owners miss. AI does not name the best business in a county. It names businesses for the town the customer is asking about. A plumber who shows up when someone in Massapequa asks may be invisible when someone in Wantagh asks, ten minutes away. So the only check that matters is the one from your customer's point of view: your trade, in the town where your customers are looking.
What real checks look like
We run these checks regularly for local businesses. In our November 3, 2026 panel of 25 town and trade searches, half of the businesses we tracked never appeared in the AI answer at all, while others held the number one spot in their town. The gap between those two groups was rarely the quality of the work. It was the quality of the footprint.
Questions owners ask
Is this the same as ranking on Google? Related, but not the same. Google shows a list and lets the customer choose. AI chooses for the customer and names a few. A business can be visible on Google and still never be named by AI.
Do reviews really matter? They are part of the public evidence AI reads about your business, and owners with strong, current review profiles show up in answers far more often. How much weight they carry next to everything else is covered in the breakdown.
Does the answer change? Yes. Answers shift as profiles, reviews, and websites change. That is why a single check is a snapshot, and why owners who care re-check on a schedule.
Check for yourself. Pick the town your customers search from, pick your trade, and see the businesses AI names. Then check your own name against the list.
