Your Customers Are Chasing AI. Is Your Business in the Answer?
By Tim Hayden· Published · Updated
For twenty years, a local business had one job online: show up on Google. Owners paid for ads, worked on rankings, and watched the map pack. That game still matters. But a growing share of your customers have stopped starting there. They open an AI tool like ChatGPT and ask a question in plain words: "Who is a good roofer near me?" "My basement is wet, who do I call?" The assistant answers with names. Your customers are chasing AI, and the only thing that matters is whether your business is in the answer.
This is no longer a prediction about the future. It showed up in Google's own numbers in the third quarter of 2026. Search queries grew at their fastest rate in five years, yet Google's search advertising revenue, $63.4 billion, was essentially flat from the quarter before, and its growth rate fell hard. Google's leadership told investors why: people using AI answers generate less advertising money than people clicking through traditional results. More questions than ever, aimed at Google, and the money barely moved, because the questions are being answered before the ads get a chance. When the company that owns search reports that, a local business should assume its customers are already there. (Source: Alphabet third quarter 2026 earnings, October 28, 2026.)
Ranking on Google and being named by AI are different things
Plenty of businesses are paying for Google and not being seen on AI at all. A strong Google presence helps, but AI builds its answer from the whole public picture of your business: your profile, your reviews, your website, your listings, and how consistently they all describe the same company doing the same work in the same towns. Where that picture is fuzzy, AI names a competitor whose picture is sharp, even if that competitor ranks below you on Google.
Think of it this way. Google hands the customer a list and lets them judge. AI does the judging first and hands over a verdict. Being judged well requires a different kind of visibility than ranking well.
What this means for a small business budget
The good news is that AI visibility is not bought by the click. There is no auction to win and no monthly toll to stay named. What earns the naming is a body of work on how your business presents itself publicly, and it is work most owners have never been shown as one connected picture. That picture is the breakdown we send after the check at the end of this page. Owners who only feed the Google ad machine, meanwhile, are paying rent on attention that a growing slice of customers never sees, because those customers got their answer before they ever reached Google.
Start with the only question that matters
Before spending anything, find out where you stand. Ask the question your customer asks, from the town your customer lives in, and see whose names come back. If yours is there, you will see your position. If it is not, you have learned the most useful fact in your marketing this year, and you learned it for free.
Questions owners ask
Is AI search replacing Google? Not replacing, but it is taking the first question. Many customers still verify on Google after. The business AI names gets verified. The business it skips gets nothing.
I do not use AI myself. Why should I care? Because your customers do, especially the younger homeowners now aging into furnaces, roofs, and remodels. You do not have to use the tool your customers use. You do have to be findable inside it.
How fast can this change? AI answers are rebuilt from current public information, so a footprint that gets fixed can start showing up in answers in weeks, not years. It is one of the few marketing problems where the fix and the result are both fast.
Check for yourself. Pick the town your customers search from, pick your trade, and see the businesses AI names. Then check your own name against the list.
