The 30-Second Test Every Local Business Owner Should Run This Week

By Tim Hayden· Published · Updated

Here is a test that takes thirty seconds and tells you more about your marketing than a month of reports. Open the AI tool your customers use, like ChatGPT. Ask it the question a customer in your town would ask, in the words they would use: "Who is the best HVAC company in Hicksville?" "I need a roofer in Riverdale, who should I call?" Then read the names it gives you.

Is one of them yours?

The three outcomes, and what each one means

You are named first or near the top. That is the strongest free advertising in your market right now, and it is worth protecting. Answers move, and the competitor below you is working.

You are named, but low, or named for one town and missing in the next. This is the most common result we see. AI knows you exist but does not reach for you first, and its picture of where you work is narrower than the truth.

You are not named at all. For every customer who asks AI first, and there are more of them every month, you were never an option. They did not reject you. They never heard of you. Owners in this spot usually assume the opposite is true, which is exactly why this test matters.

One warning about the test itself

A single answer is a sample, not a verdict. Ask twice and the order can shuffle. Answers differ between assistants and change as the web changes. That is why a real read uses the same question, asked cleanly, tracked over time, town by town. But as a first look, thirty seconds is enough to tell you which of the three outcomes above is yours, and most owners have never looked at all.

Questions owners ask

Which assistant should I test with? The one your customers are most likely to open. Testing with more than one gives a fuller picture, which is what a tracked panel does.

I was named last month and I am gone now. Is that normal? It happens. Answers are rebuilt from current public information, so positions move in both directions. A business that watches its position catches a slide while it is still cheap to fix.

What do I do with a bad result? First, get the full picture before changing anything: how you stand in each town you serve, and what the named businesses have that you do not. That breakdown is what we send after the check below.

Check for yourself. Pick the town your customers search from, pick your trade, and see the businesses AI names. Then check your own name against the list.
